The Agriculture and Rural Development expects peak storm frequency between now and October, with six to eight likely to form with two or three hitting the mainland, deputy minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep said at a meeting on Thursday.

In November and December another two or three storms and tropical depressions are expected, with some making landfall.

The ministry also forecast that from late July through September the north, north-central, Central Highlands, and southern regions would experience prolonged heavy rains.

Central Vietnam should brace for unusually heavy rainfall at that time, especially out-of-season and localized heavy rains, it said.

The rainy season there is in October, November and early December.

Heat waves are also expected to persist there in late July and August, but their intensity is expected to gradually decrease by September.

So far this year four storms have entered Vietnamese waters.

The first, Wutip, struck in June, triggering floods across the country’s central region, killing 11 people and submerging over 3,500 homes.

The second, Danas, entered Vietnamese waters in July but did not make landfall and caused no casualties.

The third, Wipha, made landfall in northern Vietnam on Tuesday and has since then continued to bring downpours to the north-central region.

The fourth, Co May, did not make landfall either.
