Ngoc Linh Ginseng is now present in various domestic and international markets.

The announcement of the inscription of “Folk Knowledge of Ngoc Linh Ginseng” into the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List provides an opportunity to affirm the status and brand of Ngoc Linh Ginseng from Nam Tra My District, not only in the marketplace but also in the cultural identity of the nation.

Ngoc Linh Ginseng, once a “hidden medicinal plant” of the Xe Dang ethnic group, has now become a key crop contributing to the prosperity of ethnic minority communities, significantly improving their livelihoods.

Proudly referred to as a “national treasure”, Ngoc Linh Ginseng is not only a rare medicinal herb but also a symbol of the knowledge, culture, and spirit of the ethnic groups in Nam Tra My.

Across generations, from the deep forests, the Xe Dang people and their fellow ethnic groups have discovered, conserved, transmitted, and expanded a valuable body of knowledge related to Ngoc Linh Ginseng, from identifying and caring for the plant to propagating it and using it in daily life and traditional medicine.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen The Phuoc, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Nam Tra My District, emphasised that the recognition of the folk knowledge of Ngoc Linh Ginseng as a national intangible cultural heritage not only highlights the state’s acknowledgment of the deep cultural values of the local community but also provides a motivation for ongoing preservation, promotion, and dissemination of this heritage across the country and the world.

This is a great honour for Nam Tra My District and, above all, a source of pride for the local ethnic communities — the guardians of the mountains’ soul and of intergenerational knowledge.

“In the time ahead, Nam Tra My District will continue to closely cooperate with departments, agencies, and central authorities to develop a plan for the sustainable conservation, utilisation, and promotion of the folk knowledge of Ngoc Linh Ginseng. We will also step up efforts to pass on this knowledge to younger generations, in association with the development of ecological and cultural tourism, contributing to the improvement of both the material and spiritual lives of local people,” said Phuoc.

The planned area for conservation and development of Ngoc Linh Ginseng in Quang Nam Province has been identified as spanning over 15,000 hectares.

In Quang Nam Province, since 2017, when Ngoc Linh Ginseng was recognised by the government as a national product, the province has encouraged and supported the distribution of seedlings to local people for cultivation.

To date, the planned conservation and development area for Ngoc Linh Ginseng has been determined to cover more than 15,000 hectares (including over 2,200 hectares at altitudes above 2,000 metres, and more than 13,300 hectares at altitudes from 1,200 to 2,000 metres), mainly concentrated in Nam Tra My District.
