At 4 p.m. Saturday, the storm’s center was about 230 kilometers east-northeast of the Paracel Islands, with sustained winds of 102 kph, Vietnam’s national weather agency said.

Kajiki is moving west-northwest at 25 kph and will likely strengthen further as it passes southern Hainan Island before making landfall between Thanh Hoa and Quang Tri provinces on Monday.

Authorities have raised the disaster risk for coastal and inland areas from Thanh Hoa to northern Quang Tri. Meteorologists say Ha Tinh and northern Quang Tri are especially vulnerable.

Heavy rains are expected from Sunday night through Tuesday. The northern delta, southern Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa–Hue could see 100–150 millimeters, with some spots topping 250 mm.

Thanh Hoa to northern Quang Tri may be drenched with 200–400 mm, and in extreme cases more than 700 mm. Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are also forecast to see rain.

Kajiki formed earlier this week near Luzon in the Philippines and rapidly grew into a powerful storm. It is the fifth typhoon in the South China Sea this year, following Wipha in July, which left two dead and five injured in northern Vietnam.

Officials are urging residents to reinforce homes, prepare for possible evacuation and avoid going to sea.
