Bumper lychee harvest brings high incomes to Bac Ninh farmers
BAC NINH – For local farmers in Bac Ninh province, lychees are not only a sweet fruit but also a treasured “amulet” rooted in their love for the land and generations of hard work. This devotion has driven many growers to invest in improved cultivation techniques and meticulous care to enhance quality, resulting in premium prices and robust market demand. Each harvest season, numerous households earn profits reaching billions of VND – the sweet reward for their diligence and commitment.
Focusing on quality
Currently, lychees in Phuong Son ward are in full harvest. At the orchard of Le Van Kien in VND Dao, clusters of red, plump lychees hang among lush green leaves, impressing all visitors. His five-hectare orchard, established in 1995, has been the family’s main income source for nearly three decades.

In 2020, responding to market demands, the family shifted to GlobalGAP-standard cultivation under technical guidance from agricultural authorities. Strict adherence to production regulations has ensured top-quality lychees, making his orchard a preferred supplier to exporters targeting demanding markets like Japan and Europe.
This season, Kien expects a yield of around 80 tonnes. So far, half the crop has been sold directly from the orchard at an average price of 25,000 VND (1.1 USD) per kg for high-grade fruit. Lychees with less attractive skin colour are sold to processing companies for frozen pulp production, maximising product value.
“Although GlobalGAP cultivation is more demanding, requiring strict daily care records, it guarantees stable output and full purchase contracts. This year, we expect to earn over 1 billion VND,” Kien said.
Similarly, the family of Ly Van Tri in Chay hamlet, Luc Ngan commune, is known for its clean agricultural practices and as a popular tourist stop during lychee season. On their two-hectare hillside orchard, they have long implemented VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, ensuring high fruit quality and stable yields.
Earlier this year, prolonged droughts raised fears of total crop loss, especially on the sloped terrain. But Tri invested in efficient irrigation and proper fertilisation to keep trees healthy, resulting in a quick recovery and high fruit set rate.
His family expects to harvest around 30 tonnes this season, selling at prices between 15,000 and 25,000 VND per kg. Tri’s orchard has also become a backdrop for content creators livestreaming and promoting lychees nationwide, boosting sales thanks to the beautiful scenery and premium fruit.
Expanding markets and increasing value
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, Bac Ninh has 29,700 hectares of lychee orchards this year, including 16,000 hectares cultivated under VietGAP or GlobalGAP standards.

Besides traditional sales to China, Bac Ninh lychees are now exported to premium markets such as the US, Japan, Canada, Australia, the EU, the Middle East and others. Superior quality and attractive appearance have helped the fruit win over international consumers.
A representative from Mova Plus JSC in the Czech Republic said the company had exported about 200 tonnes of lychees to Europe this season, primarily distributed through major supermarket chains.
Demand has been so strong that products consistently sell out upon arrival. In Germany, retail prices reach 350,000-400,000 VND per kg, reflecting the high value placed on Vietnamese lychees by foreign consumers.
The successful market expansion highlights the importance of clean, safe, and sustainable production. Authorities and farmers have worked together to implement rigorous cultivation standards, ensuring food safety and meeting market requirements.
Phan Van Net, Director of Phi Dien Agricultural Production, Trade and Services Cooperative in Luc Ngan, noted that 15 cooperative members now grow lychees across 20 hectares under GlobalGAP protocols.
“Initially, many were hesitant to abandon traditional methods, but with thorough guidance, they have adopted advanced techniques. As a result, our lychees consistently achieve high quality and fetch higher prices due to strong branding and stable output,” he said.
Net added that their products are always prioritised by purchasing companies, giving them a competitive edge in both domestic and international markets. “High quality is no longer an option but a mandatory requirement in today’s market,” he emphasised.
The rising value of Bac Ninh’s lychee industry is the culmination of coordinated production planning and policy implementation. By adopting safe production standards and meeting global export criteria, farmers have enhanced their competitiveness and market reach. Local authorities continue to promote clean agricultural practices and support farmers in accessing technical guidance, certification, and market connections.
In an increasingly discerning market, lychees produced under strict quality standards are expected to further expand their footprint globally, positioning Bac Ninh as a reliable supplier of premium Vietnamese agricultural products.
